Orange production
Oranges contribute significantly to a wide range of fruit juices and fruit products in more than 50% of global fruit production. The production and consumption of oranges has grown significantly over the past three decades with a combined average of 3.5%. Production and exports of used orange products also increased by 4.4% over the same period due to improved transportation and lower packaging costs. Of all the oranges produced worldwide, 20% of the total is sold as whole fruit while the rest is used to make ingredients and juice. Oranges are also used as preservatives and spices in some coastal communities. Oranges have a high content of vitamin C. It is also a source of other nutrients including folacin, calcium and potassium.
Orange Farming
Orange is one of the top citrus fruits grown in many countries after bananas and apples. The most common types of citrus are mandarin, sweet orange, and lime. There are many varieties of oranges or varieties made for each region. The variety is very protective of insects and very tolerant. Some of the most common varieties include santra, Valencia, Blood Red, and Seedles-182. Oranges thrive in both hot and humid climates. For high yields and good plant growth, dry conditions characterized by low rainfall of between 75 and 250 cm are ideal conditions. High humidity and frost conditions are ideal for the spread of disease on orange plants while hot winds cause the plant to lose its young flowers and fruits. The orange plant grows well in a variety of soils including alluvial, sandy loam, and red sandy soils. However, soil properties such as fertility, water, and pH concentration are important factors to consider. Orange plants can be watered in an orchard or given rain in case of reliable rainfall.
Orange Production
The production and consumption of oranges has grown over the years. The current production of oranges is estimated at 50 million tons. The increase in orange production is mainly due to the large area of agriculture, efficient transport, and low packaging costs. However, high productivity rates have significantly affected the rate of new planting with increased demand for oranges, especially in developed countries such as the United States. Oranges are produced worldwide by 70% of the world's total orange production in the Northern Hemisphere.
